CRITICAL THINKING

AND

READING

Critical thinking is one of the most important skills in education. The ability to think critically is what allows you to build upon gained knowledge.

Critical thinking is important to fully understanding what you are learning.

This is crucial in reading. When you think critically about what you are reading, you gain a better understanding of what is written, how it was written, and why it was written.

This module will help you use critical thinking while you read.

Let's take what we have learned about critical thinking and connect it to reading.

Critical thinking while reading is...
- connecting ideas between what you read and what you know
- reflecting on familiar experiences similar to what you are reading
- analyzing data that you come across in reading and thinking about what that means
- making predictions about what you are going to read next
- asking meaningful questions about what you have read

Critical thinking is still not...
- memorizing facts
- accepting information on the surface
- repeating given data
- refusing to question ideas
